Men's Health

 

This year Men’s Health Week runs from June 10th to 16th and we want to use this opportunity to increase the awareness about some important health issues that commonly affect men and let you know what actions you can take.

 

Prostate Cancer

  • Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men and the third most common cause of cancer related death in men
  • The chance of prostate cancer or other problems is higher in older men
  • The prostate is a gland that sits below the bladder and assists with sexual function
  • Signs of prostate problems include difficulty passing urine, blood in urine or incontinence

If you are over 50 or have symptoms talk to your doctor about prostate testing

 

Testicular Cancer

  • Testicular cancer is rare but is one of the most common cancers in young men
  • Remember to check for lumps once a month

If you notice changes or anything that doesn't feel right then see your doctor

 

Mental Health

Mental illness doesn’t discriminate - men in Australia suffer with mental illness very commonly

  • Anxiety and depression are the most common conditions, with young men at particular risk of suicide and substance abuse
  • Many men struggle to let people know they are having difficulties and refuse to show these emotions
  • Substance abuse such as heavy drinking or drug use is a common, but an unhealthy way of “self-medicating” for anxiety and depression
  • Additionally, excessive alcohol or drug use can also increase your risk of mental health issues and addiction
  • Exercising, eating healthy and having support people you can talk to will all help with your mental health

If you think your mate is struggling and you don’t know how to help them, there are many ways to seek assistance
